Deserts - we got 'em all

Been driving through a lot of desert. Come to the occaisonal oasis where we get lunch and try to find some beer. Been through lots of different types of desert - we have a black desert, a white desert and a duney type desert. I never knew there were so many ways to prepare sand and rocks for different effect. Well done to these Egyptians I say.

Nice in the truck listening to music, reading and relaxing. I've started to walk really slowly again. It's happening; something I like to call the true relax. After two months it will be complete. You can't get slowness of thought like this in just a two week holiday. I shall align my aura to the god of arse-all and my zen shall wibble in a fruitful way. (Apologies for this comment to anybody who believes in nonsense. Eat some garlic; you will feel better)

Cairo

good bunch of people. Went to Sphinx, pyramids, perfume place, papyrus place etc. Was good but a little on the rails.

I have no idea what people mean when they you get a lot of hassle at the pyramid. They musn't have been to many places. Egypt is safe and fine and very polite. Top stuff. Going into a pyramid was cool.

Cairo

History:
Went to the Cairo museum. Awesome. Antiques of immeasurable value are laid out in crusty old wooden cases reminiscent of when they were first catalouged in the 1900s. The only thing to discourage someone from breaking the glass and swiping the booty is the ever-present guard in each room carrying an old AK47. No one seems too keen to test its firing capability though.

Driving:
The roads in Cairo have no lane markings and the curb stones are enormous. This is mainly due to the fact that:
1) Lanes are unimportant if you ignore them
2) Driving is a sport, not a task
3) If you are a taxi, your car is so beat up, it doesn't matter if you hit someone else.

If the cars all had a wire pointing up into the air, it would cement the image of a city entirely driven by people in dodgem cars... I love it. Would like to know if we can hire a car just for the fun of joining in.

Sanscript:
It looks lovely. This probably says "Mark Rocks".

Coming into Cairo

Came into Cairo at about three this morning. Coming out of the airport you get a wake up call with masses and masses of people all crammed into the arrival hall, all jostling to see their friends and relatives coming through. Personal space - bah. Queueing - nonsense. This place is definitely going to be a laugh.

I love the way that during my taxi ride to the hotel, people were not only out and about, but conducting business. This is three in the morning and lots of people were tending their fruit shops. It wouldn't necessarily occur to me to go out and buy some bananas at that time. Maybe it's a common occurance in Egypt.

Anyway, I'll write some more once I've been to the cairo museum and had some more fun with the taxis.

Still miss Nic. Next time she's coming with me. That way I can have nice ham and cheese toasted sammies and a snuggle along the way ;-)

Fine examples from around the world

As part of study into the wonders of the world, I present to you the enigma of the "socks and sandals".

While here in Athens I saw a particularly fine example of the "socks and sandals" beast. With much trepidation I got out my camera and approached cautiously. It is exceptionally difficult to photograph one of these animals out of captivity. They are often accompanied by an alert female of the species, sporting khaki green shorts and a singlet top without bra. They are usually intense breeders and are swarmed with a screaming brood, usually thought to be a defence mechanism to stop anyone getting too close.

People often confuse the "socks and sandals" as simply being the "German". Although it is true that Germanic Sock and Sandals cross-breeds are the most common type of Socks and Sandals, it is not an exclusive breed.

I managed to sneak up on this one and take the photograph from downwind where he could not smell my t-shirt/flip-flop combo, known to confuse and scare them.

And what a photo! I present to you, a fine "socks and sandals"!

Athens was cool. Saw the Acropolis etc.

The second day I was there I realised that I was walking too fast and just started to slow down. This came along with the slow dawning that I am now unemployed and will be arsing about the African continent for a few months. Happy days.

Miss Nicci a lot. Boo.

Sardinia

As a warm up to the Africa trip, Nic and I are going to Sardinia today for a few days. Should be a good bit of relaxing before some serious four months of relaxing.

Sardinia = yay.

18 days to go

Only 18 days to go now. Bought some toiletries today. The last stuff I need.
With a pack and a ski bag I'm definitely overpacked. But, if you're on a
truck, "who cares", I'm not carrying the stuff.
